Drought: Find ways to conserve water

I found the article in the June 16 Herald about ways to conserve water both interesting and thought-provoking.

That afternoon, my family went out to lunch at a restaurant on Main Avenue. As soon as we were seated, the pleasant waitperson arrived at the table to fill our glasses with water and left the bottle at the table so that we could replenish our glasses ourselves. I had about three sips and others at the table had even less. We inquired as to whether the water in the bottle gets re-used. No, because it has been on the table, it must be thrown out! And we’re in an exceptional drought!

My suggestion is that Durango-area restaurants stop the practice of routinely serving water and instead only pour it if the customer requests it.

The article in the paper stated that a drip per second can lead to 150 gallons of wasted water in a day. How much water could be saved if the practice of automatically assuming that the diner wants water is stopped?

If the wait staff refills the glass rather than leaving a bottle of water on the table, all that clean, clear water would be available for other uses.

Let’s all look for ways to conserve water during this exceptional drought.
