Drugs seized during car search within Durango city limits

Juan Manuel Lorenzana-Ruvalcaba, 40, was allegedly in possession of fentanyl, meth and cocaine
Juan Manuel Lorenzana-Ruvalcaba, 40, is suspected of transporting about 1,230 grams of fentanyl, 277 grams of cocaine and 481 grams of methamphetamine in his white Toyota Corolla on Feb. 13 in Durango. He was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully distributing a controlled substance.

A 40-year-old man was arrested in Durango after law enforcement allegedly found large quantities of fentanyl, meth and cocaine in his car.

Juan Manuel Lorenzana-Ruvalcaba was driving a white Toyota Corolla when he was pulled over by a Colorado State Patrol trooper about 9 a.m. Feb. 13, according to an arrest affidavit filed in La Plata County Combined Courts.

There was one passenger in the car at the time of the arrest.

Law enforcement seized about 1,230 grams of fentanyl, 277 grams of cocaine and 481 grams of methamphetamine found in several locations within the car, including the passenger floorboard and center console, according to the affidavit.

In a medical setting, fentanyl is typically administered in doses of 50–100 micrograms every few hours and the Drug Enforcement Administration considers 2 milligrams of fentanyl a lethal dosage.

The amount of fentanyl allegedly found in Lorenzana-Ruvalcaba’s car was enough to kill about 61,500 people based on those numbers.

A digital scale and numerous plastic baggies were also discovered in the vehicle.

Lorenzana-Ruvalcaba was arrested on suspicion of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance. He is being held without bail.

It is unclear if the passenger was also arrested.

The search warrant for the car was part of a larger federal investigation being conducted by the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS declined a request for comment.
