Drunken driver crashes onto Park Elementary School grounds

Incident occurred early Saturday

A 24-year-old Durango woman has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after crashing through a fence and onto the grounds at Park Elementary School.

Durango Police Department Cmdr. Ray Shupe said that around 1:20 a.m. Saturday, authorities received a report of a disturbance in progress near Park Elementary at 510 East Sixth Avenue.

Officers arrived to find a white 2010 Chevy Malibu crashed through the chain-link fence on the East Seventh Avenue side of the school and onto school grounds, Shupe said.

No one was around the vehicle, but officers located a man about a block away identified as James Andrew Mackay, 30, of Durango.

The vehicle was registered in Mackay’s name, Shupe said, and officers identified shoe imprints coming out of the passenger side of the vehicle to the shoes Mackay was wearing.

A short time later, Shupe said a woman called police about the incident, saying she was at an apartment nearby. Officers met with the woman, who said she was punched in the face and physically abused by Mackay, who was her boyfriend. Shupe said the suspected assault occurred after the crash.

Officers determined the woman was driving the vehicle that crashed onto Park Elementary grounds and arrested her for drunken driving, careless driving and driving on a restrained license because of a previous alcohol offense.

The woman, identified as Gabrielle Fultz, 24, of Durango admitted to driving the vehicle drunk and crashing it, Shupe said.

Mackay was arrested on suspicion of third-degree assault, domestic violence.

Shupe said he did not know how much damage was caused to the school’s property. Durango School District 9-R spokeswoman Julie Popp did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.
