Duo sparks Fort Lewis women’s basketball to bounce-back win

Patterson, Yocky provide winning 1-2 punch

After a tough loss in the final seconds of Friday’s game, the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball needed a spark plug to ignite them Saturday against South Dakota Mines. Luckily, they found two.

Alyssa Yocky carried the Skyhawks with 17 first-half points, and Shelby Patterson was the second half spark, as Fort Lewis ran away from South Dakota Mines late and coasted to a 76-60 win.

Yocky finished with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds. Patterson put up a career-high 19 points in the win.

“It was a good bounce-back win for us,” Fort Lewis head coach Jason Flores said. “It was nice to see us get back to being us. We achieved our goal on defense and outrebounded them by 12.”

The goal on defense was to hold the Hardrockers (7-10, 5-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) under 40 percent shooting, and the visitors finished the night under 30 percent. It didn’t start so smoothly, though.

Yocky’s huge first half kept the Skyhawks (13-4, 8-4 RMAC) in a back-and-forth battle over the first 20 minutes, and they needed her effort badly. The rest of the squad was a tough 6-for-25 in the half.

But FLC finished the second quarter with a 6-1 run, as Patterson came alive late to give the hosts the game’s largest lead at the half with a 40-34 advantage.

Patterson kept things rolling in the second half. She scored from all over the floor – inside and out – as the Skyhawks slowly built a commanding lead.

“I felt like the offense was moving the ball well and they kept finding me cutting to the basket,” Patterson said. “Props to all my teammates because they made it happen. They created some easy baskets for me.”

Fort Lewis started the final quarter with a 17-4 run that blew the game wide open. South Dakota Mines shot a miserable 1-for-11 in the final quarter as the Skyhawks lead ballooned.

“We were all pretty (upset) after yesterday’s loss,” Yocky said. “I just wanted to stay in control and I took what they were giving me.”

Briana Clah had 13 points for the Skyhawks in the win.

South Dakota Mines had four players score in double figures with Megan Rohrer’s 15 points leading the way.

Fort Lewis will try to keep the positive momentum going at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home against Regis in a huge conference battle. FLC beat Regis in Denver 58-49 on New Year’s Eve, but the Rangers sit two games ahead of the Skyhawks in the conference standings and are in third place only half a game behind UC-Colorado Springs.
