Although the state championships for Alpine skiing have come and gone, some of the top skiers from Durango High School competed in the Western U.S. high school national championships at Mammoth Mountain in Mammoth Lakes, California on Wednesday and Thursday.

In giant slalom, Durango’s Ian Fehr finished 16th out of 71 skiers and Zach Oliver finished 18th. After two runs, Fehr finished with a combined time of 1 minute, 55.99 seconds. The winner, Prince Illano, finished with a time of 1:48.81. Oliver finished with a time of 1:56.56.

For giant slalom, the start elevation was 3,003 meters and the skiers dropped down 231 meters to the finish.

On Thursday, the Demons were represented by Holden Bronson as well as Fehr and Oliver in slalom. Unfortunately for the skiers, winds were very high and skiers only got one run. Fehr and Oliver didn’t finish their runs but Bronson finished 21st out of 72 skiers that completed a run with a time of 52.88 seconds. Cashton Jaeger finished first with a time of 44.32 seconds.

In slalom, skiers started at an elevation of 2,890 meters and skied down 160 meters to a finish at 2,730 meters.
