Durango and Montrose baseball split Friday doubleheader

DHS rallies to win a game after bad start

Though Durango’s baseball team gave up many more runs than it scored Friday in a doubleheader against Montrose, all that matters is what happened in the win and loss column.

Durango (7-6, 4-1 4A/5A Southwestern League) lost by run rule in the day’s first game, 11-1, but rebounded to take the second game 8-4. Andrew Selser got the win on the mound in the second game throwing 6 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs and eight hits while striking out two and walking none. The Demons’ ace improved his record to 4-2, and he has come away with the winning decision in each of his last three starts.

“We came out flat and they took it to us in the first game,” head coach Eric Baker said in an interview with The Durango Herald. “We started hitting the ball hard as the day went on and Andrew (Selser) was sharp and focused again.”

The Demons only amassed three hits in a Game 1 throttling by Montrose (7-6, 1-5 SWL), and it wasn’t looking good for Durango through the first three innings of the second game. The Indians took the lead with three runs in the third inning, but this time the Demons responded.

Durango scored four in the fourth and three in the fifth to grab a lead it wouldn’t lose.

Junior first baseman Peyton Woolverton was 2-for-4 in game two with two runs scored and two runs batted in, and Selser helped his own cause going 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs.

Lawrence Mayberry came in to get the final two outs and shut the door on Montrose to record the save for Durango. The senior also did damage at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Durango will try to build off the Game 2 success when it hosts Bayfield at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Both teams will wear gold to raise awareness in Tuesday’s Strikeout Childhood Cancer Game. There will also be a fundraiser in which 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward pediatric research at Children’s Hospital Colorado.
