Durango area fishing report

NOTE: The area rivers fishing report, courtesy of Duranglers Flies and Supplies.

Animas River: 1,130 cfs, rising; The Animas has been fishing very well but, with increasing flows, fishing may become tougher with dirty water. Streamers are the best idea, especially in mornings and evenings. Stonefly nymphs are also a good option.

San Juan River in Colorado: 1,010 cfs, rising; Flows are rising and fishing will be tough. Big dark streamers and nymphs will be key right now. Look for hatches of stones and caddis soon.

San Juan River in New Mexico: 458 cfs, steady; Fishing is good right now. Worms and annelids will be on the menu with off-color water. Otherwise, keep an eye out for solid midge and baetis hatches. Look for flows to be increased mid-May.

Piedra River: 1,020 cfs, rising; Flows will be high and the river off color. Fishing will be tough. Big dark stuff may find fish.

Los Pinos River: 410 cfs below dam, recently increased; With flow up, fishing will be good. BWOs are a staple but keep an eye out for caddis and midges. Streamers are also a good option.

Dolores River Below McPhee: 53.2 cfs, steady; The forest service gate has been opened and access is available all the way to the dam. Midge and BWO hatches should hold strong but keep an eye out for PMDs and Hoppers as they show up early on the D.

Dolores River Above McPhee: 922 cfs, rising; The Upper Dolores is flowing hard from snow melt. Nymphs and streamers will be the name of the game here.

Florida River: 94/11.5 Below, rising above, steady below; Fishing the Lemon inlet may be good, it will be cold, though. Below, the water is low but steady and fishing is good. Sneaky approaches are a must.

Creeks: rising; Creek fishing is picking up with each day. Most creeks will be high and cold but still fishable if you can access them.

Lakes/Ponds: Pike fishing is prime time right now. Pastorious, Totten, Puett, and Navajo are all fishing. Our local lakes are open and warming up. Vallecito, Lemon, Navajo, Totten, and Puett are all open. The Pike bite is picking up, and trout are moving and grooving strong. Look for bass to start moving to streamers as well.
