Durango area fishing report

Animas River: 1,510 cfs, falling; The water is clear and fishing is good. Float season is now! Streamers are the best idea, especially in mornings and evenings. Watch for hatches of Caddis, yellow stones, yellow sallies and drakes.

San Juan River in New Mexico: 4,310 cfs, steady; Fishing is tough right now with flows at 4,000. Fish have gone deep. However, fishing will pick up as flows are dropped later this week. Worms, eggs and annelids will be on the menu. Otherwise, keep an eye out for solid midge and baetis hatches. With rain, the ants will come.

San Juan River in Colorado: 362 cfs, falling; Flows are dropping and fishing will be is good. Look for hatches of stones, drakes and caddis.

Piedra River: 235 cfs, falling; The Piedra is dropping and fishing is fantastic. Look for hatches of stones, drakes and caddis. If fish are not looking up, a stonefly nymph rig is a good option.

Los Pinos River: 635 below dam, being dropped; Flows dropping. Look for fish to be holding close to shore out of the fast current. Nymph rigs are a must unless you see fish rising to Caddis or PMDs.

Dolores River Below McPhee: 75.5 cfs, holding at summer flows; Midge and BWO hatches should hold strong but keep an eye out for PMDs. Hoppers are a must this time of year. Mice and streamers should also be considered.

Dolores River Above McPhee: 352, dropping; The flows are dropping right now but are still quick. Nymph rigs will be necessary unless you see fish rising to PMDs, Stones or Caddis.

Rio Grande: 740 at 30 mile; 1,460 at Wagon Wheel Gap, dropping; Rio float season is in full swing. Dry flies all day with caddis, stones, PMDs, Drakes and salmonflies. Now is the time to fish the Rio, it is lights out.

Florida River: 88.3/173 below, falling; Fishing the Lemon inlet will be good. Hike into the Florida will also be good above Lemon into the Weminuche. Below the dam, fishing will good with summer flows. Watch for hatches of PMDs and Caddis. Hoppers will also be around.

Creeks: dropping; Creek fishing is picking up with each day. Most creeks will be high and cold, but still fishable if you can access them.

Lakes/Ponds: Pike fishing is prime time right now. Vallecito, Pastorious, Totten, Puett, and Navajo are all fishing.
