Durango area fishing report for July 7

NOTE: The Durango area fishing report, courtesy of Duranglers Flies and Supplies.

San Juan River (Nm): 523 cfs, dropping; The San Juan has been dropped and float and wade fishing is good. Expect fish to be found all over in the likely spots. Look for the flying ant fall with rains.

Animas River: 1,090 cfs, falling and clear; The Animas is dropping and clearing up. With cleaner waters and dropping flows, expect fish to be looking up to PMDs in the mornings, and caddis in the afternoons and evenings. Nymph rigs or a hopper dropper is a good idea. Look for Tricos, too.

San Juan River (CO): 240 cfs, falling; Flows are dropping and wade fishing is on. Town will be busy with tubers in the day, but look for caddis and PMDs to be hatching. If nothing on top, hopper droppers and nymph rigs are key.

Piedra River: 94 cfs, dropping quick; The Piedra is dropping and fishing is heating up fast. Look for smaller stones, drakes and caddis. Fish will be out in the riffles and runs. Summer also brings out the spruce moths in droves. PMDs may also show up.

Los Pinos: 676 cfs below dam, steady; Flows are dropped and fishing is picking up below the dam. Classic nymph rigs are in order but look for hatches of stones and caddis to possibly bring fish to the surface.

Dolores River Below McPhee: 77.3 cfs, steady; Wade fishing will be going strong with fish. A stealthy approach is a mush. Hoppers and PMDs will be the summer ticket.

Dolores River Above McPhee: 320 cfs, slowly falling; With falling flows, fishing will get better with every day. Watch for stones and caddis to be out and about. If no action on top, a dry dropper with attractor bugs will be a good go-to.

Florida River: 60.6 cfs above/209 below, falling; Lemon is full, but the upper Florida will be fishing fantastic. Below Lemon, if you have access to some water on the Florida, fishing will be great. Look for hatches of caddis and little olive stones as well as PMDs.

Rio Grande (30 mile /Wagon Wheel): 240 cfs at 30 mile/627 Wagon Wheel Gap, dropping; Flows are dropping but the fishing is holding strong. Hatches of caddis and drakes are keeping the fish looking up. PMDs are also out and about.

Creeks: dropping; The fishing on our high country creeks is great. Flows are falling and fishing are looking up. Dry time is now.

Lakes/Ponds: Most local lakes are iced off and ready to fish. Very high, backcountry lakes may still have some ice. Fishing is great for smallmouth, and trout. Pike fishing is slowing down, but some are still being caught. Navajo is open, Totten and Puett will be fishable as well. Lemon and Vallecito are also open. Electra is open. Carp fishing is really, really good right now.
