Durango Arts Center: A summer of vibrant arts and exciting events

Jason Lythgoe

This July, the Durango Arts Center was abuzz with the thrilling stage production of “I Hate Hamlet.” Audiences were treated to spectacular performances filled with wit, drama and comedic brilliance. The cast’s dynamic energy brought the hilarity to life, making it a standout event of the summer. The success of this production showcased the exceptional talent and dedication of our local theater community. If you weren’t able to catch this fantastic show, don’t fret – there’s more to come!

Excitement is already mounting for our next major theatrical venture: the musical “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” This beloved, interactive show promises to captivate audiences with its unique storytelling and wonderful characters. Set in a Victorian-era mystery, this unfinished Charles Dickens novel turned musical invites theatergoers to become part of the action, making each performance a distinctive experience. We can’t wait to unveil the intricate mysteries and memorable melodies of this enchanting production. Full of local favorites, this show is sure to bring back the old Strater Theatre Melodrama memories. Also in the theater in August is the Durango Youth Theatre’s musical camp show “All I Really Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten,” performed Friday to Sunday; the nonstop hilarity of Lower Left Improv on Aug. 9 and 10; and a special western Silent Sunday with Swanson. There’s something for everyone.

In the gallery, the “That’s So Durango Show” continues to delight visitors with its eclectic mix of local artistry. This exhibit celebrates the diverse talent of our community, featuring a wide range of mediums and styles that reflect the vibrant spirit of Durango. If you haven’t had the chance to experience this dynamic showcase yet, be sure to visit before it concludes. And a special treat for August’s First Friday, we’re hosting Durango Poetry and their Red String Poets at 6:30 p.m. in the gallery. Don’t miss this melding of the creative minds.

Adding to the excitement in the gallery this month, the upcoming “Member’s Exhibit” opening on Aug. 16 will highlight the creative works of our dedicated Durango Arts Center members. This exhibit provides a platform for local artists to share their passions and talents with the community, offering a unique glimpse into the artistic endeavors of our members.

And, of course, our ongoing art classes every week are open for registration throughout the summer. Whether you’re a budding artist or a seasoned creator, our classes provide opportunities for skill development, creative exploration and community engagement. The Durango Arts Center remains a vibrant hub for cultural expression, and we invite everyone to immerse themselves in the rich array of artistic experiences we have to offer.
