A Durango man charged with robbing a man at knifepoint at a downtown ATM has been arrested again, this time on suspicion of using a fake identification to purchase a car and sell it to another man.
Maurice Anderson, 31, was charged Thursday with 11 new felonies, including theft, identity theft, forgery, criminal impersonation and violation of bail conditions.
He is free after being granted a personal recognizance bond – meaning he didn’t pay anything – by La Plata County Judge Martha Minot.
At an arraignment hearing Thursday, Deputy District Attorney Reid Steward asked 6th Judicial District Judge Jeffrey Wilson to increase his bail, but the judge declined to override the lower court’s decision, saying no new evidence was presented.
He added: “(I) don’t know that I would have set this as the initial bond, but it wasn’t my decision.”
Anderson is suspected of going onto a “dark website” to purchase someone’s personal identifying information for $130. He then used that information to open a bank account and finance a 2016 Hyundai Sonata for about $30,000. He then sold the car to a Farmington man for $16,385, according to an arrest affidavit.
Anderson, a former Fort Lewis College football player, previously was charged with five felonies on suspicion of robbing a man at an ATM behind Bank of the San Juans, 144 E. Eighth St. He allegedly stabbed the man in the chin and fled in a white Toyota Prius.
An ATM camera recorded the suspect wearing a black, hooded shirt, gloves, sunglasses and a scarf covering his face.
The robbery occurred April 21. Police identified Anderson as a suspect and arrested him May 22 at Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio. He was released the next day on $25,000 bail.
