The Durango High School baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday, beating Battle Mountain 19-4 in Delta.

“We did well,” said DHS head coach Rob Coddington. “We came out aggressive, swung at our pitches, played better defensively and got good pitching from Tanner Coddington and AJ Folk.”

Durango improved to 1-2 with the win. Battle Mountain is now 0-1.

The Demons scored three runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third while Battle Mountain kept the game close with one run in the first, two in the third and one in the fourth.

Durango, however, plated 13 runs in the fourth to pull away and comfortably win the game. Coddington said after Gavin Hamlin laid down a bunt to load the bases, the game spiraled in Durango’s favor from there.

Hamlin went 2-for-2 with two walks and four runs scored. Jordan Stanley went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and three runs scored. Devin Davidovich and Liam Southerland both went 2-for-3, and Brady Hansen went 2-for-4.

Tanner Coddington started on the mound for DHS. In four innings he only gave up five hits while striking out four. Folk faced four batters in the fifth and struck out two of them to close the door on Battle Mountain.

The Demons will play two games Friday at Montrose High School, taking on Liberty at 11 a.m. and Monarch at 1:30 p.m.

“It was good for us after last week,” the coach said. “Hopefully we keep the momentum going and keep playing good ball.”
