The Durango High School baseball team swept George Washington in a doubleheader on Saturday, 14-10 and 7-2.

The Demons improved to 7-4 overall with the nonleague wins. DHS was also scheduled to play Farmington on Tuesday as this paper was going to press.

In Game 1 against George Washington, Durango led most of the game, but had to rally in the seventh inning after the Patriots scored six runs in the sixth.

DHS opened the game by scoring six runs in the first inning to take the early lead. George Washington responded with one in the first and three in the fourth.

The Demons got one more in the fifth and led 7-4 after the inning, but George Washington erupted for six runs in the sixth to take the lead.

Durango, however, responded with a rally of its own, plating seven runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead back and win the game.

On offense, Durango was well-balanced and all nine of the Demons in the lineup came around to score at least one run against the Patriots.

Tanner Coddington had three base hits, including a triple, three RBIs and a run scored for DHS. AJ Folk had two RBIs and scored twice. Tagert Bardin, Michael Benner, Gavin Hamlin and Brady Hansen also scored two runs while Ian Szura, Jack Englund and Lane Greenlee all scored one. Hamlin also tripled and drove in a run while Benner recorded an RBI as well.

Bardin pitched a scoreless seventh to get the win. Coddington started and gave up four earned runs in four innings while striking out two and walking three. Chance Costa also threw two innings for the Demons, but gave up six earned runs.

In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Durango jumped out to an early lead again. This time, the Demons never let it go.

Englund pitched five innings to get the win for DHS. Englund only gave up one hit and one run while striking out six and walking five. Folk pitched the last two innings and struck out five of the six batters he faced to close the door on the Patriots.

Szura had three RBIs and scored one to lead the Demons’ offense. Liam Southerland and Hamlin both tripled and scored while Benner, Englund, Coddington and Greenlee also touched home safely.

DHS scored two runs in the first, four in the third and one more in the fourth before George Washington got on the scoreboard. The Patriots plated one in bottom of the fourth and one more in the sixth, but was unable to catch the Demons.

The Patriots slipped to 4-7 overall with the losses.

The Demons will play twice more on its home field this week. DHS will begin its 4A/5A Southwestern League schedule against Grand Junction Central with games at 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
