Tayler Dossey and Maddy McManus were named to the All 5A/4A Southwestern League after the duo led the Durango High School girls basketball back to the Colorado High School Activities Association’s Class 4A state playoffs.
The two were instrumental in leading DHS to the tournament after the Demons turned their season around with a four-game winning streak that came after the Demons had dropped six consecutive games. After the late-season turnaround, DHS lost in the first round of the playoffs to No. 37 Falcon.
Dossey, a senior, was named first team all-league after she averaged 9.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per game, both of which were team highs. She also had 3.5 offensive rebounds per game and 1.9 steals per game. Dossey was tough to handle in the paint and scored at least 10 points or more in 12 of 21 games, and her season-high was 20 in a five-point loss to Grand Junction Central.
Sophomore Maddy McManus also was named to the all-league second-team. The shooting guard averaged five points and 4.8 rebounds per game. Her game-high in points was 15 against Grand Junction Central.
Grand Junction’s Mackenzie Younker was named the conference player of the year, while Montrose’s Steven Skiff was named coach of the year.
For the Demon boys, two seniors were named to the All-SWL team in Al Hurworth and Cullen Robinette. The pair led DHS to a second-round appearance in the Class 4A state playoffs after the program went 4-18 the year prior. Hurworth was named to the second team after he averaged 10.8 points and eight rebounds per game. His season-high came against Englewood in the Mitchell Tournament in Colorado Springs in mid-December, when he scored 24 points on 10-of-12 shooting.
Robinette, the other fellow senior captain, was named to second-team, as he was the team’s second-leading scorer at 9.1 points per game and averaged 2.8 rebounds per game. In the team’s first-round upset of No. 17 Skyline, he scored a team-high 17 points. His season-high also came in the Mitchell Tournament when he scored 26 points on 8-of-9 shooting against the host.
The conference player of the year was Ian Barnes of Fruita Monument, while Ryan Voehringer of Montrose was named coach of the year.
