The Durango and Bayfield High School track teams raced well at the Piedra Vista Invitational in Farmington on Saturday, as there were plenty of winners and top-five finishes.
DHS teams won the event, as the boys finished with 80 points, while the girls had 85. The Bayfield girls finished in third with 54 points, while the boys took eighth with 19 points. The Durango girls collected five first-place finishes at the meet, and also had a number of placers.
Cassandra Blau won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.03 seconds, and the 200 in 26.85. In the 200, Anna Pylar came in ninth (29.14).
The Demons placed 1-5 in the 800, as Madaleiene Burns won the race (2:23.20), Bekah Moenning was second (2:23.47), Emma Fitzgerald was third (2:34.81), Halle Moore was fourth (2:35.07) and Kayleigh Frazer rounded out the top five with a time of 2:39.16.
Demons’ Tea Forest won the 1,600 (5:47.00), and Abby Fehr took fifth (5:55.00). The DHS 4x200 relay team won with a time of 1:51.95.
In the field events, Alyssa McConnell finished in third in the high jump, with a leap of 4-feet 10 inches. In the long jump, Anderson Gillen was third (14 feet, 8.75 inches), and Camren Hyde was fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.
On the boys side, Alex Hise won the two sprinting events, the 100-meter dash (11.57) and 200 (23.27), while the Demons also fared well in the long-distance events. Marcus Flint won the 800 (2:02.74), Aidan Fitzgerald won the 1,600 (4:29.00), and Noah Bodewes won the 3,200 (9:50.00). The 4x400 team won the relay with a time of 3:36.36.
Maxton Warman took fourth in the 400 (53.69), Hise was fifth (54.18), while Luke Tichi was second in the 1,600 behind Fitzgerald (4:34.48), and Teslin Stecher was fourth (4:59.83).
In the field events, Hise won the long jump with a jump of 21-feet, 11.5 inches. Martin Cuntz took sixth in both the long and triple jumps. Bodewes took fifth in the pole vault (10 feet).
The Demons will compete at the Mickey Dunn Invitational in Grand Junction on March 29.
The Wolverines also put in a number of good performances on the day. Jordan Lanning won four events and added a second-place finish. She stood atop the podium in the 100-meter hurdles (15.42), 300 hurdles (47.77), high jump (5-feet, 6.25 inches) and the javelin throw (96-feet, six inches). She took second in the 100-meter dash (13.14).
Bayfield had one other winner in Mikayla Barnes, who won the discus with a throw of 109 feet, 4.5 inches, and also took first in the shot put with a throw of 35-feet, 11 inches.
Claire Hufnagel was fifth in the 3,200 (15:05.26), Hannah Whitmer was third in the pole vault (8-feet), while the 4x200 relay team finished sixth.
For the Wolverine boys, they had one winner in David Hawkins, who won the shot put with a throw of 52-feet, 4 inches. They had a number of top-five finishes. Josh Kaufmann took second in the discus (134-feet, 5 inches) and Dawson French took third in the pole vault, as he vaulted to a height of 11-feet.
Zeb Shields finished in seventh in the 800 (2:16.12), and ninth in the 1,600 (5:07.46). The 4x200 relay team was fifth (1:44.72), sixth in the 4x100 (48.75).
The Wolverines will also travel to Grand Junction for the Mickey Dunn Invitational on March 29.
