Durango bikers win Haymaker Classic

Durango and Animas score team titles

Durango DEVO mountain bikers representing Durango and Animas high schools competed in their second race of the season on Sept. 10 in Eagle, the Haymaker Classic.

Two Durango riders won their races while tons of other local bikers finished in the top-10 as Durango won the Division 2 team title and Animas scored the Division 3 crown.

In the varsity boys race, Chase Connors finished second, Liam Bezek placed fifth, Jacob Huber crossed ninth, Bryan Hastey finished 11th and Orrin Bleth placed 13th for Durango, while Brayden Harms finished 14th for Animas. Max Johnson of High Desert Composite in Cortez finished about 45 seconds ahead of Connors to win his second varsity race of the season.

Riley Huston placed third in the varsity girls race for Durango while Maddy Glotfelty placed fourth and Julia Glotfelty finished eighth for Animas.

Emmett McManus won the JV boys race for his second win on the year, while Kai Lokey finished right behind him in third for DHS.

Betty Holcomb also picked up her second win of the season, winning the freshman girls race. Her Durango teammate, Tilia Clausen, crossed second.

Quentin DeLuca also scored for Durango with a second-place finish in the sophomore boys race.

Rounding out Animas’ scoring five were Jake Sandau (fourth, freshman boys) and Kadence Marion-Wagoner (98th, JV boys).

Several other Durango bikers also finished in the top-10 of their races, but weren’t among Durango’s 10 scoring riders.

Chase Groom finished eighth in the JV boys race, Ellie Shaw placed fourth in the freshman girls race, Cedar Bremner crossed fifth in the sophomore boys race, one spot ahead of Dylan Timmerman, and Rowan Lott finished seventh in the freshman girls race.

Durango scored 5,205 points to win its team title. Grand Junction finished second with 4,784 and Montrose finished third with 4,549 while High Desert placed 11th with 2,958.

Animas scored 2,290 points to win Division 3, followed by Leadville (2,207) and San Luis Valley (2,068).

Salida, meanwhile, won the Division 1 team title with 6,834.

The teams will next race Sept. 24 in Snowmass.
