Durango boys soccer shuts out Fruita Monument 3-0

DHS boys soccer earns league win

Durango High School’s boys soccer team bounced back after Friday’s tough loss at Montrose by beating Fruita Monument 3-0 on Saturday.

Sophomores Elijah Fenton and Sailor Longfellow teamed up with senior Mads Bundgaard to provide the Demons (5-3, 1-1 Class 4A/5A Southwestern League) with the offensive spark they needed to take care of the Wildcats (2-3, 0-2 SWL).

“It was a much better game than (Friday),” Durango head coach Dalon Parker said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We were dialed in from the start, and we were checked in mentally.”

Bundgaard and Longfellow scored in the first half and quickly turned around any bad feelings left over from the shutout the day before at the hands of rival Montrose.

Already up 2-0 in the second half, Fenton took a pass from junior Connor Henry and scored his fourth goal in three games to put the game out of reach.

Trey Furnas and Seth Marvin-Vanderryn combined for the shutout in net for the Demons. Furnas started the match but was injured in a collision. Marvin-Vanderryn filled in nicely in Furnas’ absence.

“We really showed our depth and wore them out,” Parker said. “They’re a good team, and we gave them a tough time. It was good to see this effort from the guys after one of the worst games we’ve played in two years.”

Next up for the Demons is a 5 p.m. matchup Friday at Grand Junction Central.
