Durango brings out the best in people

I don’t know what it is about Durango that brings out the best in people, at least during the several times a year we visit.

On Saturday Aug. 9, while we dined with our two grown daughters at Gazpachos, an elderly lady (older than us; we’re in our 70s) approached and offered a printed coupon she’d clipped that gave us a free appetizer. Our server, Shane, told us the lady, Pat Anderson, is a real sweetheart who eats there every Saturday. I told Shane to put her on our check. Later, Pat came to our table to say “thank you.”

She told us she’s lived in Durango 45 years and worked in the ER at the hospital for 30. And she said because her daughter teaches special education kids in Bayfield, Pat regularly eats McDonald’s Happy Meals because she gives the toys inside to her daughter who then gives them to her students. “I hate Happy Meals,” she said, “but the kids love the toys, so I eat the Happy Meals.”

Meeting Pat Anderson on our 56th wedding anniversary was one of the best anniversary gifts we’ve ever received. Thank you, Durango!
