The Durango City Council decided to fully fund the organic parks program Monday, but councilors delayed a decision on how many parks will stay in the program.
After controversial meetings, a compromise that would leave six of the eight parks in the organic parks management program was proposed by the City Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz.
Just the highly used athletic parks would exit the program.
The councilors were previously presented with a plan that would leave only two parks in the program.
The council allocated $22,500 to fund the program in eight parks, but they will discuss the issue further in December.
Organic Parks Durango advocates would like to see all the parks managed without synthetic herbicides or fertilizers – as the resolution passed in 2012 states.
But Katrina Blair saw some progress in Monday’s decision.
“I’m pleased that the councilors are recognizing the values of the community,” she said.
