Durango City Council honors fire victim as hero

Alex Archuleta speaks at the Durango City Council meeting Wednesday after Mayor Dick White honored his nephew, Kevin Abeyta, for saving a mom and two children in a recent townhouse fire. Archuleta was joined by other members of Abeyta’s family.

The Durango City Council honored Kevin Abeyta for sacrificing his life to save a mother and two children from the Tercero Townhouse fire in June.

Abeyta, a life-long Durango resident and restaurant owner, escaped the fire but went back inside to rescue Grisela Picasso of Durango, and her two boys, Ira and Rivers. Grisela Picasso and her boys were staying temporarily with her sister, Hilda Picasso, at the townhome.

“Mr. Abeyta will forever be remembered as a hero,” said Mayor Dick White.

Abeyta’s family members accepted the proclamation, and his uncle, Alex Archuleta, who helped raise him, addressed the crowd.

“He really was a selfless person,” Archuleta said.
