Durango City Council needs a lot of work

Reading the article on the proposed censure of Olivier Bosmans by City Council (Herald, Feb. 6), I was dismayed. Listening to the recording of the meeting increased my concern given the conduct of councilors toward Bosmans.

Clearly, the mayor and city manager can’t distinguish between the definition of lying versus having a different view of what happens in a meeting.

No one asked Bosmans for specifics on why he thought something else was discussed. Clearly, councilors and city management are biased. Residents like Bosmans because he asks probing questions other councilors don’t ask. He’s not a believer in group think. He’s not always a “team player” as Gilda Yazzie and Jessica Buell demand.

Watching this meeting is reminiscent of other council meetings. Why can’t they demonstrate more effective skills? This council has had unnecessary conflict with the Southern Utes, La Plata County Board of Commissioners, downtown businesses, residents near the library, the Third Avenue and 15th Street roundabout and nonprofits working with the homeless.

It seems that the council views the problems centered in others without owning their piece. Watching this council and the previous one is like watching a train wreck.

We residents expect that council members and city officials will act with skill and decorum. Calling out fellow council members or someone you work for publicly is unprofessional and violates the city’s Code of Conduct.

Perhaps the council needs to consider censuring itself and perhaps the mayor needs to become more of a leader.
