Durango cobbles together a top-3 result

Demons play ‘solid’ at Cobble Creek after their Bridges’ victory

Durango was trying to make it three consecutive victories.

Another top-three result is nothing to shake your golf club at, though.

“It was a solid performance,” Durango High School boys golf head coach Kirk Rawles said Thursday after the Demons played Cobble Creek Golf Course in Montrose. “We were right in the mix.”

Montrose won the tournament with 224 strokes.

Grand Junction finished second with 230 strokes.

The top two teams shared co-medalists, too: Donny Kinnaman of Grand Junction and Zane Sauer of Montrose tied atop the leaderboard with matching 72s.

Cy Spicer led DHS with a 75, while Cory Gillespie and Erik Walker shot matching 78s for the Demons’ 231-team total.

Cameron Barnhardt shot an 81, and Daniel McElwain rounded out the Demons’ varsity with a 96.

“There were two bright spots: Spicer’s 75 one day after shooting a 74, and Erik Walker’s first high school tournament round in the 70s,” Rawles said of his varsity squad. “We definitely had some good things going on.”

Kyle Pritchard led the DHS junior varsity with an 85 from the varsity tees and a second-place finish in the JV tournament.

Pritchard was followed by teammates Kobe Szura (87), Lucas Robbins (96), Nick Roberts (98), Blake Martin (104) and Dillon Hoselton (105).

“Our guys had a really tough time adjusting to the greens, the speed of the greens,” Rawles said of Cobble Creek, which played tougher than Bridges from Wednesday’s victory. “We gave up a lot of putts from 8 to 15 feet, and that really was the big difference for us.”
