About 100 people gathered in Rotary Park on Sunday night to be part of a candlelight vigil to show support for a Durango woman who was recently a victim of sexual assault. The vigil came a day after a Durango Herald story about the incident affected community members deeply. Far and wide, people used social media to express heartbreak, anger and support.

“It was in my heart pretty heavy,” said Durango resident McCarson Leigh Tafoya, who organized the event. “I don’t know who it is, but I’d like to show her we have support for her in some way.”

According to police reports, the woman was sexually assaulted and threatened with a gun late Oct. 13 or early Oct. 14 at a party in northeast Durango. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of felony sexual assault.

“I just want to send some love and light to her, and let her know we’re thinking or her and she’s not alone,” Tafoya said.

Many at the vigil shared Tafoya’s sentiment.

“Our hearts our broken. Times are scary. We have daughters. We’re trying to show support,” said Catherine Gervais.

“I think we’re here because we want victims of sexual assault not to feel alone. There’s a community of support, and it’s unfortunate that a huge population of women have gone through this,” said Sandra Butler.

“I just want to show the victim that the community is rallying behind her, and we’re here to give her whatever support we can,” said Nancy Stilwell.
