Durango Devils and bantams finished weekend with mixed results

Teams combine to go 3-2 in weekend action

The Durango youth and high school club hockey teams were back on the ice over the weekend with a mixed bag of results.

Durango’s bantams finished with a 2-1 record in the weekend’s action against West Elk and Grand Junction. The Durango Devils High School Hockey Club team split with the Amarillo Bulls at Chapman Hill Ice Rick.

Robbie Grogan made 28 saves while Landen Sill scored two goals and assisted on two more in Saturday’s 5-1 Durango win at the high school level. Amarillo found itself in the penalty box often, and the Devils took advantage on the power play.

Wes Killinen, Gus Kidd and Joe Lawton also found the back of the net in Saturday night’s win. Nick Piccaro had an assist in the Devils’ win.

Sunday morning, however, it was the Durango team that frequented the box often, and the visitors capitalized. Devils’ goalie Collin Thornburn did his part by stopping 41 shots, but it wasn’t good enough as Amarillo held on for a 3-2 win.

Killinen had a goal for the second game of the weekend and Eno Ulshafer added one as well. Sam Kidd and Sill had helpers in the loss.

The Durango bantams came together in well-rounded team victories as they beat West Elk twice over the weekend, Unfortunately, they came up short in the quest for a perfect, three-win weekend as mental breakdowns and numerous penalties allowed Grand Junction to get the better of the Durango squad.
