Durango Diaries Season 4 will start with survival stories

Welch

Susie Welch is one of just eight people who survived after a Continental Airlines plane flying from Denver to Durango crashed outside Bayfield in January 1988.

Bird

Jeremy Bird is an experienced skier who triggered an avalanche that pushed him over a 40-foot cliff and buried him under 5 feet of snow in 2017.

Albosta

Andrew Albosta is veteran climber who fell 40 feet during a climb and suffered internal bleeding, a broken pelvis and a fractured elbow last year.Season 4 of Durango Diaries will continue through November at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the Durango library. Upcoming event topics are:

SEPT. 18: Historical crimes. Historians will share some of the most interesting cases from Durango’s past. John Peel will discuss the 1907 murder of a Secret Service agent; Robert McDaniel will talk about a shootout between the editors of two rural newspapers in 1922; and Sharon Greve, historian for the Durango Police Department, will discuss interesting crimes from the department’s archives.

OCT. 2: Alternative medicine. Whether it’s Chinese medicine, crystal therapy, acupuncture or cannabis therapy, Durango is home to myriad alternative health options. Acupuncturist Sydney Cooley, naturopathic physician Nicola Dehlinger and Reiki and crystal therapy practitioner Teresa Jantz will share their stories.

OCT. 16: How you can save the environment. Local environmental advocates will share stories about how small movements can grow. Bears Ears advocate Regina Lopez-Whiteskunk, Great Old Broads for the Wilderness Executive Director Shelley Silbert, city of Durango Sustainability Coordinator Imogen Ainsworth and advocate of eco-friendly business practices and Durango Cannabis Co. co-founder Nic Borst will share their stories.

NOV. 6: Photography. Three photographers will share the stories behind their favorite photographs and how they work to create the perfect frame. Storytellers include portrait and wedding photographer Allison Ragsdale, nature photographer Frank Comisar and Herald photographer Jerry McBride.

NOV. 20: Forever young. As our population ages, no one seems to be slowing down. Three retirees who are still pursuing active lifestyles will share their stories. Speakers include National Senior Games swimmer Kathy Kronwall, 82; Pilates instructor Diane Legner, 80; and skiing expert Major Lefebvre, 70.
