Durango Double race double the benefit

Silverton’s Kelly Wolf was the fastest women’s trail runner at the Durango Double last weekend, conquering the course in 1 hour, 52 minutes, 53.40 seconds. She also was second behind Katherine Telfeyan in the road race and finished first among women in the Durango Double.

Dakota Jones of Durango was the men’s trail race winner at the Durango Double. The 25-year-old finished more than a minute ahead of G. Anthony Kunkel of Durango with a time of 1:33:00.37. Kunkel crossed in 1:34:27.93, and he went on to finish first in the Double after completing the road race, too.

Dave Thibodeau, president of Ska Brewing, battled through pain and a bloody face to finish 23rd overall at the Durango Double, as he compelted both the road and trail half marathons Oct. 8-9.

Not only did the Durango Double serve an ever-growing running community in the Four Corners, it also did a world of good last weekend.

The trail half marathon was held Saturday, with Durango’s Dakota Jones edging fellow Durangoan G. Anthony Kunkel for victory. But Kunkel also completed Sunday’s road half marathon and claimed the overall Durango Double title with a combined time of 2 hours, 50 minutes, 11 seconds.

Silverton’s Kelly Wolf was a force in both races and was the top woman in the Double with a combined time of 3:21:42. She won the trail race in 1:52:53 and was second behind Katherine Telfeyan of Los Alamos, New Mexico, in the road race.

Equally important was the result that came outside of the race. Through entry fees and sponsorships, the event raised another $30,000 for the Women’s Resource Center. That event matched last year’s contribution.

Event organizer Brendan Trimboli thanked the Animas Surgical Hospital, the race’s presenting sponsor, for it’s continued support.
