Durango finishes 6th of 12 at Cherry Creek tournament

The Durango High School volleyball team spent two days in Denver for the Cherry Creek tournament and came away with a good feeling.

The Demons finished sixth out of 12 teams after a 2-2 record Saturday.

They beat Horizon (26-24, 25-18) and defeated Bear Creek (26-24, 18-25, 15-11) but lost to a very good Lakewood team (25-22, 25-18) and came up short to Rocky Mountain (25-17, 25-18).

“This was some of the best competition in the state, and we’re really happy with the our performance,” Durango head coach Colleen Vogt said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We played the best volleyball we’ve played yet.”

Vogt was very pleased with the play and leadership from her seniors.

Maddie Robertson continued to be a force from the outside hitter position, and Lauran Morrisey’s leadership as the libero has provided valuable experience on the floor for a very senior heavy squad.

Lia Henriksen and Sarah Waller brought more senior experience in the middle and did a great job blocking at the net over the two-day tournament.

Ellie Gervais and Leah Stephens round out the Demons’ senior core.

“We are senior led, and they are great leaders,” Vogt said. “They all played well this week, and we’re happy with where we’re at heading into our league play.”

Southwestern League play will start with a 6 p.m. matchup Friday at Grand Junction Central and an 11:30 a.m. tilt Saturday morning with Fruita Monument.
