Durango Fire, Powerhouse meet puppies

I would like to thank Scott Davis with Durango Fire and Rescue, and Joe Lounge with the the Powerhouse Science Center, for welcoming the Guide Dogs for the Blind puppies in training to the firehouse and museum.

It is very important for these puppies, during their training, to be exposed to as many different environments, sights, smells, sounds and distractions as possible while they are with their raisers for the first 14-16 months of their lives. These experiences provide them with the best foundation for success when they return to Guide Dogs for the Blind for formal training.

Davis was willing to bring out a fire truck, allow the puppies to walk around it, get used to the lights, smells and the sounds of the engine, horn and siren. He also dressed in the full gear, including the mask and breathing apparatus, and let the puppies investigate and become comfortable with his appearance. It was a great experience for the puppies and the adults. Davis’ educational program gave all of us a deeper appreciation for the physical and technical training that is ongoing in our dedicated and professional fire and rescue department.

Lounge was equally welcoming and supportive, as were the visitors at the science museum. The puppies were allowed to walk through and experience the distraction of balls and flying cloth squares, unusual sounds, stairs and the adults and children that were present.

A big thanks to all of the Durango community who have shown support to our puppies in their distinctive green jackets.

Please feel free to stop and ask the raisers questions, but always ask first to pet the puppies; they are working and learning. You are all helping to contribute to these puppies’ future success in eventually giving a person who is blind the mobility and freedom to move about confidently in everyday life.
