Durango Food Bank takes steps to prepare ahead of coronavirus

The Durango Food Bank will be providing supplemental food bags to help families prepare for the possibility of self-isolation because of the coronavirus.

In a measure to prolong the food bank’s ability to assist food insecure residents should the virus enter this area, the food bank is also making plans to offer food programs through drive-up distributions.

The food bank has experienced a 55% increase in need over the last year. Paired with effects of the coronavirus, there is concern about being able to maintain adequate supplies.

Given the recent rush to supermarkets, food donations have come to a halt. Corporate contributions from food recovery programs have also been down. The food bank needs help getting crucial supplies like high-protein items, including canned meats, beans and peanut butter.

Not everyone will be able to self-isolate should the need arise. The food bank is doing everything it can to provide a safety net for those in need now, even if it leaves them short of supplies down the road.

The food bank is committed to providing emergency food relief efforts to all residents struggling with food insecurity throughout La Plata County, especially the most vulnerable among us – children, seniors and families struggling to making ends meet.
