The Durango High School football lost its second consecutive game on Friday, falling to the Farmington Scorpions 38-17.
Farmington jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the contest, but Durango responded with 17 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.
“We were really playing some good football, then we kind of shot ourselves in the foot,” said DHS head coach Todd Casebier. “We had some dumb offensive penalties, which is just unacceptable.”
In the second half, Durango’s defense made a big stop early, forcing the Scorpions to turn the ball over on downs after getting inside Durango’s 10-yard line.
Durango, however, would turn the ball over three times after that, and five times in the game, and Farmington capitalized on the miscues.
“We had a chance to win, then we kind of squandered it,” Casebier said. “We’re showing signs of being a good team, but we haven’t been able to put it together for four quarters yet against a good team.”
DHS slipped to 2-2 overall with the loss while Farmington, which was ranked No.1 in New Mexico in one poll and No. 3 in another, stayed undefeated at 5-0.
Next week, DHS will host Piedra Vista (3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday for its homecoming game.
“We’ll have to play hard to beat them,” Casebier said. “At this point, we’re not overlooking anybody.”
Bayfield High School was also in New Mexico on Friday, taking on Aztec. The Wolverines won their contest, 46-25, to improve to 2-1 on the year.
