Durango girls 3rd, boys 8th at Tiger Invitational

The Durango High School girls track team had a good showing in Grand Junction, and the boys weren’t too shabby, either.

The girls finished third and the boys eighth after Saturday’s finals at the two-day Tiger Invitational. The DHS girls accrued 67 points, finishing behind winner Fruita Monument’s 101 and Delta’s 75. The boys racked up 38, while winner Eagle Valley finished with 89.The relay teams provided the biggest highlights Saturday for the Demons, particularly the boys and girls 4x400 meter relays:

The girls squad of Hannah Hwang, Shannon Maloney, Miranda Gallegos and Dominique Ward won the 4x400 in 4 minutes, 6.98 seconds, nearly six seconds ahead of runner-up Horizon. The boys 4x400 team of David Moening, Shane Bisogno, Trent Andrews and Joe Maloney also captured victory, finishing in 3:30.84.

The girls 4x200 relay team of Hwang, Natalie Neve, Mackenzie Sill and Miranda Gallegos placed second in 1:48.97, and the 800 sprint medley team of Hwang, Gallegos, Sill and Maloney also was second, finishing in 1:52.78.

Joe Maloney captured third in the 400 in 52.48 seconds, while Sill finished third in 27.85 in the 200. Neve was fifth in the 200 in 28.11 seconds.

Austin Miles brought home a runner-up result in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 7 inches.

Gallegos and Gabi Razma went 4-5 in the long jump. Gallegos jumped 16 feet, 8.5 inches, while Razma came in at 16 feet, 6.25 inches.

With its regular season in the rear view, the DHS track and field team will head right back to Grand Junction next weekend for the Southwestern League Championships, its last meet before state.
