A perfect 5-0 start before the winter break was just what Durango High School girls basketball coach Tim Fitzpatrick wanted for the holidays.
The Demons delivered Tuesday with a 54-42 win at Farmington.
DHS junior Katrina Chandler scored 23 points and went 10-of-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to finish off the Scorpions.
“I’m really proud of all the kids,” Fitzpatrick said. “ We will take 5-0 at the break, no question.”
The Demons led 16-13 after one quarter and methodically maintained the lead. But it wasn’t before a fire alarm went off yet again on the Demons, who have gone through three fire alarms in the last 12 months. This fire alarm sounded only 20 seconds into the game, forcing an evacuation of the gym.
“I don’t know if it is our Durango kids pulling fire alarms or what,” Fitzpatrick joked. “I don’t know how it keeps happening.”
Fitzpatrick said the team may not have come out on fire but brought a lot of energy early.
DHS junior Stephanie Bayse had a strong game with 11 points. Junior guard Riley Hall added five points off the bench, and junior forward Taylor Edwards had six points. Sophomore Sienna Johnson also played big minutes off the bench, Fitzpatrick said.
DHS will have a few weeks off before traveling to Pagosa Springs on Jan. 5 to play the defending Class 3A state champions.
