After winning the Mountain Top Classic last week in La Jara, the Durango High School girls basketball team started Pueblo County’s tournament with two more wins.
On Thursday, DHS beat Cheyenne Mountain 52-37.
“We played great team defense and the bench made big contributions,” said DHS head coach Tim Fitzpatrick. Mason Rowland also scored a team-high 17 points while Halle Peterson scored 12.
The Demons continued playing strong defense on Friday and beat Lewis Palmer 41-30.
“We had great defensive intensity from everyone,” Fitzpatrick said.
After the wins, Durango improved to 5-1 overall and was scheduled to face Liberty on Saturday.
While the Durango girls were in Pueblo, the Demon boys headed to Parker to compete at Ponderosa High School’s tournament. Durango lost to the hosts on Thursday to start the tournament, 70-26.
The Demons, however, came back on Friday and took down Littleton 52-37 to improve to 2-3 on the year.
The Ignacio girls basketball team improved to 3-1 overall with a 45-33 victory over Sanford on Friday. Ignacio jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the game and never looked back.
Sanford’s boys, however, got the best of the Bobcats, 48-23. The game was even, 8-8, after the first quarter, but Sanford won the second quarter 21-6 to pull away from Ignacio.
The Bobcats slipped to 1-3 with the loss, but both Ignacio squads were also scheduled to play Del Norte on Saturday.
After starting is season with a pair of wins, the Bayfield girls basketball team suffered its first loss to Monte Vista on Friday, 53-13. The Pirates moved to 4-0 with the win while BHS moved to 2-1.
The Bayfield boys also took on Monte Vista, but the score had not been reported as of press time.
