The Durango High School girls basketball team started strong against the Fruita-Monument Wildcats on Saturday, getting baskets from four players in the first quarter to take an 11-8 lead into the second. Fruita, however, started the second quarter with three 3-pointers and an 13-0 run to take a 21-11 lead. The Wildcats limited Durango to one basket in the quarter, a jumper from Ellie White, and went into halftime up 23-13.

Durango had a better offensive quarter in the third, scoring 11 in the frame. Mason Rowland and Carter Neiman both sank 3-pointers, and Riley Campbell hit a shot. Fruita, however, scored 17 in the third to pull away and win 47-28.

Rowland scored eight to lead DHS. Sydney Flores added seven, Campbell scored four, Neiman added three, and Reese Glover and Katelyn Sheppard both scored two. Fruita’s Kylie Wells led all scorers with 14, but all seven of her teammates contributed points.

DHS is now 13-7 overall and 3-4 in the SWL. Fruita improved to 18-3, 6-0.

Durango will play at Alamosa on Thursday and host Montrose on Saturday to conclude its regular season.

Durango is No. 18 in Class 4A’s Ratings Percentage Index so the games will help determine whether DHS hosts a playoff game.
