The Durango High School girls soccer and tennis teams both scored some big league wins over the weekend.

The DHS girls soccer team hosted Montrose in a 4A/5A Southwestern League showdown on Friday and emerged from the battle with a 3-2 overtime victory.

DHS led 1-0 at halftime, but the Red Hawks were able to even the score with two second-half goals to send the game into extra time.

Mason Rowland, however, was able to score the game-winning goal for the Demons to keep the team in the hunt for the league title.

Rowland also scored Durango’s first two goals of the game to finish with a hat trick while Riley Campbell assisted two goals.

With the win, Durango improved to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the SWL while Montrose slipped to 6-5, 1-5.

Next week, DHS is scheduled to host three nonleague games, beginning with Legend at 6 p.m. Monday. DHS will then play Telluride at 5 p.m. Tuesday before finishing the week at 6 p.m. Friday against Aspen.

Tennis slams Montrose, Central

The Durango High School girls tennis team improved to 7-1 overall with a pair of wins over teams from 4A Region 8. DHS beat Montrose 6-1 on Friday and then beat Grand Junction Central 6-1 on Saturday to stay in first place in the league with a 4-0 mark.

Against Montrose, Ellie Davenport lost a close match at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-4, but DHS won at every other position. Adwyn Chowen won 6-0, 6-1 and Jordan Kitchens won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 and 3 singles.

DHS also won the doubles matches in straight sets. Ellie McLean and Juliet DiGiacomo won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Lola Bradshaw and Sydney Pritchard won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Avery Edgar and Rachel Ager won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. Litzy Lopez and Addie Cady then closed out the duel with a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 4 doubles.

The same DHS doubles duos all won on Saturday in straight sets against Grand Junction Central as well.

Davenport won against Central’s top player, Alexis Wickham, 6-1, 6-0. Chowen picked up her second win in two days, 6-3, 6-1.

Kitchens, however, came up short 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

DHS still gave the Warriors their first league loss, and second overall. Central is now 8-2, 4-1 and Montrose is 1-9, 1-4.

Durango will host next host Grand Junction at 3:30 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday in two duels between undefeated league foes. Junction is 5-3, 3-0.
