Durango has high activity in rear-view mirror

The home field did not welcome the Durango High School girls soccer team warmly.

The Demons lost to Montrose 3-1 on Friday at Riverview Sports Complex, avenging a 1-0 DHS win March 8 in Montrose.

“They were able to get behind our back line really well,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “They picked us apart with that.”

DHS (2-2-2, 2-2-2 Southwestern League) trailed Montrose (5-3, 3-1 SWL) 1-0 before Lauren Milliet equalized the game with an assist from her younger sister, Katie Milliet.

The Indians scored the next two goals to put the game out of reach.

“Overall, it was a well-played game by them,” Parker said. “Our girls didn’t play bad. We were a couple touches, a couple passes, away from success.”

Parker was pleased with the way his team approached the game mentally, which was an area of concern during the less fruitful stretches of DHS’ six-game road swing to start the season.

“The girls definitely came out and fought,” he said. “They were very stoked and ready to play. We just have to put the final pieces together. We had a lot of good chances that we just didn’t capitalize.”

The Demons won’t have much time to dwell on the loss, though.

They will host Grand Junction Central at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riverview Sports Complex.

Durango beat Central 4-0 on March 14 in Grand Junction.

“(Saturday) when we have those opportunities, we need to be poised enough to finish them,” Parker said. “The girls need to come out with the same focus they came out with (Friday) and put a whole 80 minutes together.”

Durango then will play at Palisade, a nonconference game, on April 12, then will return to SWL play against Montezuma-Cortez on April 17 in the first of three games in three days.
