The Durango Demon and Animas Osprey High School Mountain Bike Teams have been racing impressively this fall in the Colorado High School Mountain Bike League, and the success continued last weekend in Granby.
Durango stayed undefeated in Division 2 with another top finish and held onto the first place in league standings by 27 points ahead of Grand Junction. After the two races, Animas continues to cling to second-place in Division 1, 108 points behind Colorado Rocky Mountain School.
“The Durango teams represented with incredible spirit up at Granby Ranch,” Durango DEVO Administrative Director Jamie Wienk wrote in an email to The Durango Herald. “These athletes give their heart and soul to the sport and they are true team members.”
Durango freshman Maddie Jo Robbins finished second in the girls varsity race, just ahead of Animas’ Camryn Sippy, who finished third and will head into the final race in second-place individually in the season-long points race.
In the boys varsity race, Animas senior Kieran Eagan finished fourth, and Durango’s Lucas Robbins took 14th. Durango’s Jimmy Pope and Animas’ Perrin Kileen were neck-and-neck for most of the race and finished in a virtual tie for 25th.
The junior varsity races were also successful for the programs. Ce Compton of Animas finished second and took over the JV points lead. Osprey sophomore Alma Wolf finished in fourth place, and Amina Youseff crossed in 12th for DHS. Amimas’ John White was the top junior varsity rider with a 23rd-place finish in a field that had 130 competitors.
At the sophomore level, Durango High School’s Luke Nicholson led the way with a 13th-place effort, and Animas’ Henry Haggert was 18th.
In the freshman race, Riley Amos followed up two second-place finishes in the previous races with a win that vaulted the Animas rider into the points lead. Demons freshman Cobe Freeburn was third, Animas’ Simon Donnaway finished fourth and DHS’ Logan Moore finished fifth.
On the girls freshman side, DHS’ Sage Davis finished fourth and jumped into the top-5 in the points standings.
Next up for the Animas and Durango riders is an Oct. 8 conference final Chalk Creek Stampede in Nathrop before the state championships Oct. 23 in Eagle.
