Durango High School athletes sign to play in college

Six Demons will move on to the next level of athletics

Six Durango High School athletes and their families and friends gathered in the gymnasium Friday as the student-athletes signed their National Letter of Intent to continue their athletic careers in college.

Kathleen Duft - California Polytechnic University track - San Luis Obispo, California

“I’m so excited. I emailed the coach and let them know how interested I was and they invited me out there for a tryout. I think I have the times to make it, so hopefully it’ll turn out well. I already got accepted and I’ll probably be going there either way. I was born in California and I have family a few hours from there. It’s 10 minutes from the beach, so, that’s kind of cool too.”

Camden Garland - Fort Lewis College soccer - Durango

“I used to go up to FLC as a kid and watch their soccer teams play. I always wanted to play for the Skyhawks. I like the fact that I don’t have to go far away and, obviously what’s really important is that I get to keep playing soccer. It’s awesome to be a part of such a great program and I can’t wait to get started up there.”

Jessica Lee - Fort Lewis College track - Durango

“It’s really close to home and I like that. I’m hoping to study biology and I know they have a good program up there. The campus is so beautiful. I also have a younger sister and we’ve bonded a lot in the last few years. It was important for me to stay close to my family. I also like that it’s a new program there and I’ll have a chance to be a part of building something special.”

Sarah Smagacz - Regis University track and field - Wheat Ridge

“I think Regis was a good fit for me. It was close to home and it’s a Division II school so I feel like I’ll be able to compete right away. I like the fact that it’s close to Denver but still has a lot of open space on campus. I’m also hoping to do some study abroad and Regis has a great program for that.”

Harry Steinberg - Tufts University track and cross country - Medford, Massachusetts

“It’s really exciting for me to be able to go to a place like the Boston area. I wanted to pick a place where I’d be able to have a great athletic and academic experience and I think Tufts was the best option. I don’t feel like this is the end of anything, but it’s more like the beginning of the next chapter. Just knowing that I’ll be able to run at the next level frees me up to run my best at the end of my high school career.”

Joshua Whidden - University of Jamestown basketball - Jamestown, North Dakota

“I chose Jamestown because it seemed like the best place for me athletically and academically. I think it was perfect for what I think my athletic and academic ceilings are. It’s in a small town in North Dakota, which I like, and I feel really lucky to be able to keep playing basketball there.”
