The Durango Demons’ baseball team came out swinging to start the season.
Durango High School pounded Eagle Valley pitching, and Andrew Selser was lights out on the mound, as Durango powered its way to a 16-1 win in first game of the season at the Lloyd McMillan Tournament in Montrose.
“We’ve been working pretty hard since January, and it’s good to see it pay off,” Durango head coach Eric Baker said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “I’m really encouraged at what I saw out there (Friday). We came out swinging, and we were aggressive on the base paths. We got a bunt or two down and made plays in the field when we had to, so it was nice way to start.”
Mark Lamoreaux and Lawrence Mayberry were both 2-for-2 at the plate with a triple, and Zach Szura went 2-for-3 with a double to provide the offensive firepower. Eagle Valley (0-1) lost most of its innings eaters from last season, and Durango (1-0) didn’t give the Devils’ rotation time to find their rhythm as the offense was spraying the ball all over the field.
With the potent DHS lineup battering the opposition, Selser settled in early. He gave up only three hits and struck out nine Eagle Valley batters over the five-inning duration. The senior hurler didn’t walk a batter in his first win of the season.
“Andrew (Selser) was sharp (Friday),” Baker said. “For him to have that kind of command of his pitches this early in the season is a good thing for us.”
Durango will try for the same outcome at 8:30 a.m. Saturday against Fort Morgan and again at 1:45 p.m. against Bear Creek.
