The regularly scheduled Durango High School graduation, set for May 22, was officially postponed Tuesday, and the Durango Board of Education heard an update about plans to move ceremonies into early August.
Students are conducting a survey about options, and Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger said so far the preferred option would be to hold a ceremony that allowed for social distancing among the graduates in early August.
The ceremony might occur without an audience, but broadcast for parents, family and friends to view. Another option would allow two guests from each student who could attend the event at the DHS stadium.
The ceremony would likely be scheduled for 9 a.m. to avoid having participants and potential audience members bake in the August sun.
Another option might be to set a series of rotating small group ceremonies that would be held in June.
Another smaller ceremony, held for students who are entering the military, might be held before the early-August affair at DHS, and social distancing and other guidelines from San Juan Basin Public Health could be maintained for the ceremony for graduates entering the military, Snowberger said.
Big Picture High School has reserved Rotary Park for a graduation ceremony in the first weekend in August, and that ceremony could go forward in compliance with health orders to deal with COVID-19.
