The Durango High School ice hockey team took on the Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks on Tuesday in the Class 4A state quarterfinals in Colorado Springs.
The Demons entered the state tournament as the No. 6 seed after finishing 8-7-2 during the regular season, scoring them a first-round bye. Cheyenne Mountain, meanwhile, went 15-3-1 and a perfect 8-0 in the 4A South league to score the No. 3 seed and a bye to the quarterfinals.
On Tuesday, however, Cheyenne Mountain was able to add to its win total and keep its season alive, blanking the Demons 5-0 on its home ice.
Cheyenne Mountain will now take on No. 2 Steamboat Springs in the semifinals on Saturday. The Sailors beat No. 7 Kent Denver 3-2 in its quarterfinal.
In the other quarterfinals, No. 1 Glenwood Springs beat No. 9 Liberty 7-2 and No. 4 Colorado Academy beat No. 5 Crested Butte 3-1.
The loss ends Durango’s first hockey season as a CHSAA-sanctioned team at 8-8-2.
