Katelynn Sheppard sunk six three-pointers to finish with a team-high 18 points and lead the Durango girls basketball team to a 61-21 win over Cedaredge in the first-round of the Mountain Top Classic on Thursday in La Jara.

Halle Peterson added 16 points, Mason Rowland scored nine and Riley Campbell and Ellie White both scored six in the win.

The Demons then knocked off the host team, Centauri, 37-23 in the semifinals Friday to set up a championship clash with La Plata County rival Ignacio on Saturday evening, as this paper was going to press.

The Bobcats won a close game, 41-39, against Olathe to start the tournament. Ignacio’s girls then took down Dove Creek in the semifinals, 59-37.

Ignacio’s boys also started the tournament with a victory against Olathe, dominating the Pirates 51-20. Ignacio kept Olathe from scoring in the first and led 14-0 after one and 30-3 at halftime as it cruised to a win. In the semis, however, IHS fell to Cedaredge, 62-49.

Durango’s boys, meanwhile, started their season with a pair of two-point losses in the tournament. DHS lost to Cedaredge 60-58 on Thursday and 53-51 to Brush on Friday. The Demons got in the win column on Saturday though, taking down Olathe 28-11.
