Durango, Ignacio take road trips

Blake Dunlap and the Durango Demons shook off Cheyenne Mountain for a comfortable 54-14 victory in their season opener Aug. 30 at DHS Stadium. For their encore, Durango will play Kirtland Central at 7 p.m. Friday in Kirtland, N.M.

Kirtland Central beat Bayfield High School 28-6 in Week 1 of the high school football season last week in Kirtland, N.M.

This week, the Durango Demons will try their hand at the Broncos.

Durango (1-0) defeated Cheyenne Mountain 54-14 in its season opener Aug. 30 at DHS Stadium, including 34 unanswered points en route to its 40-point rout. The victory made a winner out of head coach David Vogt in his Demons’ debut.

Jeremy Szura, who won the quarterback competition in camp, vindicated his preseason performance with 333 yards of total offense and five touchdowns. The senior ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 180 and two more scores.

All-Southwestern League running back Tyler Worley had a strong game on the ground, too, and the game swung with the senior’s 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

DHS also blocked a punt (Isiah Mayberry) on special teams, and its defense held Cheyenne Mountain’s offense to just seven points.

“It’s about doing your job and doing it right, and everything else will take care of itself,” Vogt said after the victory.

DHS will play Kirtland Central (1-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Kirtland, N.M.

Ignacio Bobcats

Aspen wasn’t kind to Ignacio in the Bobcats’ home and season opener last week at Ignacio High School.

Aspen defeated Ignacio (0-1) 39-12, with all of the Bobcats’ points coming in the fourth quarter from their backup quarterback.

Third-year starter Adison Jones, a junior, left the game with an injury and was replaced by Austin McCaw, who threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Jefferson in the fourth quarter.

Ignacio then forced a fumble and scored on the ensuing possession.

Ignacio will play Dolores Huerta (1-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Pueblo.
