Durango is a renowned western town

The May 23 Herald story regarding Durango’s nomination for best town in America forgot to mention another award Durango has won – not once, but twice. A selection as the No. 1 pick in top-10 western towns by True West magazine. Despite its popularity as a biking, hiking, rafting and outdoor town, Durango’s heritage plays an important part in its popularity for all cultures.

Events such as the Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering, Fiesta Days, the La Plata County Fair, Durango Heritage Celebration, the Animas Museum, Durango Farmers Market, La Plata County 4-H program and the Durango High School award-winning Future Farmers of America chapter support the fact that Durango’s original economy was built on agriculture, mining and the train. Each of these organizations cover a different aspect of that history and add to the richness of this town we all love.

Let’s not forget our past as we move toward the future.
