Durango is No. 2; AHS is No. 4

Cycling programs bring home hardware from state

The cycling season ended with a bang for both Animas and Durango high schools at the Colorado High School League State Championship.

Durango wrapped up a runner-up result in Division 2 for the season after winning the team event Oct. 20 in Eagle. AHS, meanwhile, finished fourth in Eagle and fourth for the season in Division 1.

Durango’s Kaylee Blevins and Animas’ India Waller went 1-2 in the three-lap varsity girls race, with Blevins winning in 1 hour, 19 minutes, 44 seconds and Waller finishing in 1:21:12. With the runner-up result, Waller took the overall season title.

Waller’s teammate, Kamryn Sippy, won the two-lap junior varsity girls race in 53 minutes, 48.54 seconds to lock up the league title, while Katja Freeburn of DHS was third both in the race and in the league standings.

Keenan DesPlanques of AHS was second in the JV boys race in 1:11:59, locking up a runner-up finish in the season standings by 21 points behind champion Quintin Cook of Vail.

Ellen Campbell was second for Durango in the Division 1/2 sophomore girls race in 1:00:35 and finished third for the season.

Keiran Eagen of AHS was second in the Division 1 freshman boys race in 50 minutes, 8 seconds to wrap up the league title in his classification, and Durango’s Lucas Robbins was second in the freshmen boys race in Division 2 and was second in the overall season standings.
