A Durango man faces felony charges for allegedly driving drunk.
John David Cochran, 56, is charged with second-degree felony aggravated driving while intoxicated for reportedly driving drunk with an open bottle of Jim Beam, according to the statement of probable cause.
Cochran reportedly has seven prior DWI arrests, making this his eighth, court records say.
A Farmington Police Department officer stopped Cochran at 7:42 p.m. Oct. 10 at the corner of North Butler Avenue and Sunrise Parkway. He reportedly was driving a white Ford F-150, according to the statement of probable cause.
Police reported finding a “375 ml bottle of Jim Beam 80 proof whiskey” with a broken seal on the center console, and “approximately one-fourth of its contents” missing, according to the statement of probable cause.
Cochran reportedly told police that he had not consumed alcohol and that the bottle of Jim Beam did not belong to him, but to one of his coworkers, as “his vehicle was a work vehicle,” according to the statement of probable cause.
Police noted in the report that Cochran was “slurring his words” and had “the odor of an intoxicating beverage on his exhaled breath.”
He reportedly failed to complete three field sobriety tests, according to the police report.
Cochran’s blood-alcohol content reportedly was more than twice the legal limit. He allegedly blew a 0.21 on the Intoxylizer 9000 instrument, the report says.
Cochran was booked into the San Juan County Detention Center.
His preliminary hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 10 in Farmington Magistrate Court.
