The Durango mountain biking squad continues to put together strong results as the state championship approaches.

In the team standings, the Demons finished first in the Division 1 class.

Junior Emmett McManus secured another win for Durango, winning the varsity boys division with a time of one hour, 14 minutes and 58 seconds after completing the three-lap Chalk Creek Stampede. Demons junior Kai Lokey finished second in the varsity boys race with a time of 1:16:05.

“It's our team’s favorite course of the season,” Durango coach Martin McWright said. “It's a really fast course, and especially this time of year it's really beautiful and just great weather for racing.”

Sophomore Betty Holcomb finished second in the girls varsity race behind Rose Horning of Leadville. Horning finished with a time of 1:28:16, while Holcomb finished with a time of 1:30:10.

Rowan Lott finished first in the junior varsity girls race. The sophomore crossed the finish line after two laps at 1:03:35. Durango’s Ellie Shaw was second behind Lott with a time of 1:03:42.

Durango’s Johan Sounders finished third in the JV boys race. The freshman finished the two-lap race with a time of 54:19.

The Colorado High School Mountain Biking State Championship will be at Glenwood Springs on Oct. 21.

“Emmett has been pretty far ahead of the field for all of these races, he's been pretty far ahead of Kai as well,” McWright said. “This will be a good chance for him to show how the PHR region stacks up against the other regions. They've been saying the Piedra region which we're in is the fastest of all the regions, so we'll see if that's true come the state championship.”
