Durango Nordic Ski Club competes in Junior National Qualifier

Skiers took part in 5K individual start, 10K mass start

The Durango Nordic Ski Club hit the road this past weekend to Maloit Park in Minturn, just south of Vail, to get one step to qualifying for the National Nordic Championships in Lake Placid, New York.

Skiers from the college level all the way down to the under-8 division competed in a technical course.

In the 5-kilometer individual start, Betty Holcomb and Ellie Bruckbauer finished 15th and 16th, respectively, in the U16 women’s division for DNSC. Jack Purcell finished 15th in the U16 men’s division for DNSC as well. Dewa Ilg finished 18th in the U18 women’s division in the 5-kilometer individual start.

In the 10-kilometer women’s mass start, Ilg finished 47th in a field full of collegiate skiers along with a few high school skiers like Ilg.

Holcomb finished 12th in the U16 women’s mass start and Bruckbauer finished 17th. Purcell finished 14th in the U16 men’s mass start. Archer Nicovich finished seventh in the men’s U12 mass start for DNSC.

The Durango Nordic Team will travel to Frisco for the final Junior National Qualifier race Feb. 24-25.
