I wanted to thank all of the people and sponsors responsible for a great pickleball sporting event that was held in Durango on Sept. 21 and 22. The Southwest Colorado Pickleball Association sponsored the tournament held at the Durango High School tennis facility. There were players and observers from several different states participating.
I wanted to especially thank the 9-R school district for allowing the tournament to take place on their property. It is my understanding that there will a monetary reward to 9-R for their participation, and I am fully supportive of that decision. As pickleball continues to be one of the fastest growing sports in the United States, I look forward to future tournaments to be held in Durango.
There can be significant good will and monetary rewards for hosting such events for the Durango community. Any events that bring visitors to our town will certainly impact our local economy and I am hopeful that the powers to be embrace not only pickleball tournaments in the future but all events that showcase and enhance our town.
