Police on Tuesday identified a man found dead behind Walmart in Durango as 46-year-old Matthew Smith.
Smith was found unconscious, not breathing and blue in color about 2:50 p.m. Sunday in a tent behind Walmart, said Cmdr. Jacob Dunlop with the Durango Police Department.
Someone on scene attempted CPR until medics arrived, at which point medics continued life-saving efforts but were unable to revive Smith.
Police had been investigating Smith’s death as “suspicious” in nature, but Dunlop said Tuesday no foul play is suspected.
Initial reports suggested Smith had head injuries, but an autopsy conducted Tuesday determined those were “superficial at best, and not anything related to his passing,” Dunlop said.
Police now suspect Smith’s death may be related to health issues or alcohol use.
Authorities are awaiting the results of toxicology reports before making a final determination as to cause of death.
Smith had a Durango address on his ID card, but he was apparently living homeless at the time of his death, Dunlop said.
